Grace Hartigan was an American painter with an abstract style. Grace Hartigan was born in Newark, New Jersey in the year 1922.
Hartigan was married at the age of seventeen. She and her husband had planned to move to Alaska. The couple ended up in California where she began to paint. Hartigan’s husband was drafted to serve in the army in world war two.
After her husband was drafted the artist moved back to the east coast where she attended Newark College of Engineering where she studied mechanical drawing.
In 1945 the artist moved to New York City where she became one of the New York School of abstract expressionism. After the end of second world war the couple decided to part ways.
